Burning sensation when urinating ?
A painful, burning sensation when urinating?... It is more common in women, but many men also have to deal with it. The pain or discomfort usually occurs during or shortly after urination and can be a symptom of a medical condition. There are several possible causes and usually, a doctor can easily determine the right one. In women, it is often a urinary tract infection that is the cause of the problems, but in men (especially older men) a prostate infection can also be the culprit. In both women and men, it can be a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that causes a painful feeling when urinating. In any case, it is wise to consult a doctor if you have any complaints.
An overview of the most common causes of a burning sensation when urinating in men:
• Urinary tract infection
Often the burning sensation when urinating is caused by inflammation. It is also possible that you urinate a little bit each time, even though you feel an extreme urge to urinate. A urinary tract infection is often accompanied by back pain or pain in the lower abdomen. The infection can occur in the bladder, but also in the urethra or the ureters, and often the prostate is inflamed as well. Inflammation of the prostate can cause pain in the area between the scrotum and the anus. It is important to treat inflammation of the bladder in time to prevent it from 'rising' and leading to an inflammation of the kidney pelvis.
• Prostate Diseases
The cause of the burning sensation when urinating can also be a prostate disorder, for example, a prostate infection, an enlargement of the prostate or prostate cancer. Men over the age of fifty, in particular, have benign enlargement of the prostate. This can lead to frequent urination, difficulties in urinating, weak stream, interrupted stream or simply not being able to urinate at all.
• Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)
Gonorrhea and chlamydia, as well as genital herpes, trichomoniasis, for example, can lead to a burning sensation when urinating. Gonorrhea is popularly known as 'the clap', it is caused by bacteria in the ureter that cause severe inflammation of the urethra. This usually causes severe pain when urinating and abnormal yellow-green discharge from the penis. It is possible that chlamydia does not cause any symptoms in men. If there are any symptoms, these are often complaints as a result of an inflammation of the urethra.
